Editors and translators of medieval texts need dictionaries. Researchers dealing with medieval German texts, however, still have to consult dictionaries compiled in the 19th century. Moreover, these dictionaries are closely interrelated and have to be used all together for obtaining sufficient lexicographical information. The paper characterizes the benefits of using the internationally acknowledged Standard Generalized Markup Language SGML in encoding the dictionary data and in creating a closely interlinked compound of four dictionaries to Middle High German on a CD-ROM. The main section of the paper deals with the graphical user interface of the CD and its functions, underlining the options of sophisticated information retrieval.
