Abstract

Efficient production and transmission of power is indispensable for profitable operation of any industry. Although overhead power lines exist all around the world today for power transmission, maintaining them efficiently using inexpensive techniques is a laborious ordeal. Losses in overhead power transmission can be attributed to many factors like rupture caused by natural disasters, or wear and tear over time. Many sectors depend on continuous, uninterrupted power supply daily, and unchecked losses in power transmission can result in the loss of revenue for the company, as well as life threatening losses in some cases. Consequently, identifying the locations where the damage has occurred is an important issue. Since power transmission lines span over long distances of several hundred kilometers, it is strenuous to manually locate the disruption in power supply in case of a discrepancy. This paper proposes a technique which makes it possible to locate the aberration quickly, even when the terrain is not suitable for manual navigation. This system is designed to facilitate the analysis of transmission lines by functioning as a UAV health assessment system. It is a machine capable of observing and reporting the status of power lines and their surrounding environment.
