Abstract

The surveillance service by networked cameras has been focused on as a standard service in the Internet of Things (IoT) for various fields. In this service, video traffic aggregation seems to be one of the fundamental problems in the connection between networked cameras and a server remotely. This paper proposes that Passive Optical Network (PON) technologies with point-to-multipoint configuration via optical splitters are applied to such traffic aggregation. Although conventional PON technologies prioritize downstream information transfer, the surveillance service requires a guarantee of upstream information transfer. Therefore, this paper proposes deployment using the Subcarrier Digital Modulation PON (SDM-PON), which provides the dedicated bandwidth for upstream information traffic. This paper is organized as follows; summary of conventional PON technologies and standardization trends, requirements on traffic aggregation for the surveillance service, the concept of SDM-POM, proposed mechanisms and design on the SDM-PON for this service, and evaluation of transmission performance. Finally, this paper concludes the feasibility of SDM-PON for the surveillance service.
