Abstract

Ionic wind thrusters offer key advantages such as low noise, low power consumption, fast response, and compact structure, making them attractive for auxiliary propulsion and flow control in civil aircraft. However, practical application requires optimization of thrust and thrust-to-mass ratio. This study experimentally investigates the effects of emitter wire density and collector mesh density on the performance of wire-mesh ionic wind thrusters using a custom-built thrust measurement system. Results show that sparse emitter arrangements improve thrust in space-constrained configurations. A specific mesh density is identified to maximize both thrust and thrust-to-mass ratio, and an optimized wire-mesh electrode design is proposed that enhances thrust while minimizing mass. These findings support the engineering application of ionic wind thrusters in civil aviation.
