The role of Indian Higher Education Institutions in sensitizing young minds to Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)

This research is a maiden contextual attempt to quantitatively assess the contribution of Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) in India to realize various Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) through institutional activities and engagements. Using data from Self-Study Reports (SSRs) submitted for institutional accreditation, the study extracts SDG-relevant metrics from the broader accreditation framework. Institutional achievements in these areas are analyzed using regression analysis and quantified peer team observations. HEIs in India play a notable role in advancing SDGs – especially in green initiatives, water conservation and societal outreach. However, there are gaps in areas like accessibility, renewable energy adoption, and funding for sustainability. The research analysis depends on the data that HEIs have submitted for accreditation. The researcher considers the same as a secondary source. The research does not involve any fieldwork or on-field direct measurement. The findings support policy-making organizations in identifying effective sustainability practices and framing them as guidelines for broader implementation. Apex bodies may use the insights to define targeted programs for HEIs that foster sustainable development. The research quantifies the societal impact of HEIs through SDG-related activities. It also highlights opportunities for region-specific community engagements. This research highlights institutional involvement in achieving SDGs and identifies existing gaps. It evaluates the strengths and weaknesses of each metric and proposes expected standards and prototypes for community engagement, enabling successful models to be adopted and replicated.
