Abstract
Deepfake refers to the creation or manipulation of audio, video, or other media content using advanced artificial intelligence (AI) techniques, particularly deep learning algorithms. The term is derived from the combination of “deep learning” and “fake.” Deepfake technology enables the synthesis of hyper-realistic content, often involving the substitution of one person’s likeness or voice with another, leading to the creation of deceptive or fabricated multimedia. Typically, deepfake creation involves training a deep neural network on a large dataset of images or videos of a target individual. The model learns to understand and replicate the target’s facial expressions, gestures, and voice patterns. Once trained, the model can generate new content that convincingly imitates the target’s appearance and behavior. Deepfake have been utilizes for different aims, ranging from entertainment and art to more concerning applications like misinformation, identity theft, and malicious propaganda. The rise of deepfake technology has raised ethical, legal, and security concerns. The potential for misuse includes the spread of fake news, the manipulation of political events, and the erosion of trust in digital media. Efforts to combat deep fakes involve developing detection tools, implementing legislation, and raising awareness about the existence and implications of this technology. As deepfake technology continues to advance, there is an ongoing need for interdisciplinary collaboration to address its societal impacts and establish safeguards against its misuse.
