Abstract
The Chinese animation industry has experienced tremendous growth in recent years with strong policy support and an electronically connected youth audience. National and local government support has augmented the funding, incentives, and education for the development of animation production and IP. In parallel, the aging youth audience, Generation Z, is contributing to consumption and business growth in the animation and related industries, fueled by the recent explosive growth of animation, comics, and gaming, which has transformed this sector into a lucrative ecosystem. This study assesses the entire Chinese Animation industry as a value chain, encompassing creative content, IP development, digital and traditional distribution, and monetization levels within the entire ecosystem. In China's animation industry, the core creativity lies in the world of cartoons, animation, or IP. This creativity is then developed into IP, which is further refined through collaboration with state and private studios to create creative content. Platforms and brands are sharing an increasing stake with the acceleration of the entire IP into games, Accessories, or media tie-ins. The offline experience in engagement would be in monetizing experiences through themed cafes, retail experiences, and exhibitions. As fan culture expands, new business concepts are emerging through cross-industry collaboration and a new generation of fan engagement models, leading to increased consumer loyalty. The overall animation and creative industry in China is a good example of culturally derived content successfully cultivated into a complex, interconnected economic industry that has capitalized on innovation, commercialization, and cultural engagement inherently embedded in its growth, enabled by stakeholder relationships between government, technological advancements, and shifts in consumer culture.
