Abstract

As oil and gas exploration expands into challenging terrains such as deep formations, ultra-deep waters, and unconventional reservoirs, the complexity of drilling operations has surged. This expansion introduces heightened risks, including surge pressures, well leaks, formation collapse, and stuck pipe incidents. To address these challenges, there is an urgent need to advance managed pressure drilling (MPD) technology and equipment with enhanced automation and intelligent control systems. Such advancements aim to transition from semi-automated to fully automated and intelligent drilling processes, enabling precise prediction and management of complex subsurface conditions. By doing so, drilling risks can be mitigated more effectively and efficiently. This study explores the development of MPD technology and intelligent equipment internationally. It focuses on key aspects such as intelligent control systems, real-time data acquisition and processing, and advanced technologies like complex machine learning (ML) algorithms and decision-making software. The research highlights how these innovations contribute to safer and more efficient drilling operations. Preliminary field tests have demonstrated the technical feasibility and advantages of intelligent MPD systems; however, further validation and optimization are required in practical applications. Looking ahead, integrating MPD technology with cutting-edge intelligent systems is expected to revolutionize pressure control in drilling operations. This integration will support the exploration and development of complex oil and gas resources, ultimately fostering technological independence and self-sufficiency in oil and gas engineering sector
