Résilience et chant chez Gérard Étienne

Résumé : La présente étude se préoccupe de la résilience par le chant, stratégie majeure contre l’asservissement et la déshumanisation chez Gérard Étienne. Dans son roman La pacotille , le chant restitue la dignité aux personnages humiliés et souffrants, les dotant d’une force intérieure grâce à laquelle ils résistent aux pressions de leurs détracteurs et sur-montent les épreuves. Les chansons des répertoires français et québécois des années 1960 et 1970 insufflent courage et fortitude. Selon Étienne, pour qui l’écriture constitue la « quête d’un mode d’expression qui pourrait remédier à la faiblesse des mots », nous ver-rons que l’intertexte musical reconstruit et revalorise la parole en voix humaine. Abstract : My article focuses on resilience through singing, a major strategy against enslavement and dehumanization in Gérard Étienne’s work. In his novel La pacotille , singing restores dignity to humiliated and suffering characters, endowing them with an inner strength thanks to which they resist the pressures of their detractors and overcome hardships. Songs from the French and Quebecois repertoires of the 60s and 70s instill courage and fortitude. According to Étienne, who considers writing as a “quest for a mode of expression that could remedy the weakness of words”, we will see that musical intertext reconstructs and revalues speech in human voice.
