Abstract

The machining of Metal Matrix Composites (MMCs) presents substantial challenges due to the non-homogeneous and anisotropic nature of their constituents, which typically leads to rapid tool wear and increased production costs. To address these issues, this study investigated the turning performance of an Al-Si matrix composite reinforced with oil palm empty fruit bunch (OPEFB) fibers using High-Speed Steel (HSS), uncoated carbide, and TiN-coated carbide tools. Evaluated based on tool life, wear rate, and economic efficiency, the experimental results and production cost analysis demonstrate that TiN-coated carbide offers the highest wear resistance and manufacturing efficiency compared to HSS and uncoated carbide. With an achieved tool life of 114 minutes and 20 seconds and a minimal wear rate of 0.0003 mm/min, TiN-coated carbide proves to be the most viable tooling option for optimizing the machining of Al-Si/OPEFB composites in terms of both tool longevity and cost-effectiveness.
