TLDR

My impression is that emphasis has shifted in the study of cognition from studies of cognitive functions themselves to studies of the role of cognitive function in attempts to explain other things, and I want Cognition to be a leader in the intellectual future of cognitive science.

Abstract

Richard B. Hetnarski celebrated his 90th birthday on May 31, 2018, and resigned from the position of Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Thermal Stresses on June 30, 2018. Also, this year marks the 40th anniversary of the Journal. As we all know, it was Richard who founded the Journal in 1978 and edited it for 40 years. His work has been enormous, marked by dedication to quality, content, detail, and—as time went on—leading to a major publication venue in our field of scholarship. Thus, it is a fitting time, on this round date, to edit this special issue of the Journal, a task I have undertaken with the Guest Editors of this issue, which is dedicated to Richard and to the celebration of the Journal’s anniversary. In putting together the issue we have invited a number of friends and colleagues of Richard. The response has been so positive that the papers have filled four regular issues (issues 10, 11, and 12 of 2018 and issue 1 of 2019). With best wishes to Richard!
