Abstract
Integrating artificial intelligence (AI) in education has revolutionized various aspects of teaching and learning. ChatGPT, an AI-based language model, has emerged as a promising tool in English Language Teaching (ELT). This systematic review examines the benefits, challenges, and pedagogical implications of utilizing ChatGPT in ELT. The PRISMA framework analyzed 30 studies from various academic sources related to ChatGPT in English Language Teaching, such as Mendeley, PubMed, and Google Scholar. Published between 2022 and 2024. The findings indicate that ChatGPT enhances learning efficiency by providing instant feedback, facilitating self-paced learning, and offering adaptive instructional support. ChatGPT is not meant to replace teachers, who are essential for effective pedagogy, even though it can automate additional chores to support traditional language instruction and help students with independent study. Instead, the focus of the educational process should remain on the teachers. The study emphasizes the need for a balanced approach, integrating ChatGPT with traditional teaching strategies to maximize effectiveness. Future research should explore its impact on speaking and listening skills to ensure holistic language development.
