Abstract
As artificial intelligence (AI) decision-making systems become increasingly widespread across high-stakes sectors, such as the health care sector, financial sectors, police departments, employment agencies, and governmental agencies, these systems can be highly accurate and scalable; however, there exists a multitude of issues that can arise when utilizing these systems. This study will primarily examine the problems that arise from the use of automatic and semi-automatic decision-making systems through the use of AI decision systems. In terms of the ethics of AI decision systems, the primary focus of this study will include the major ethical concerns surrounding the use of AI decision systems, including bias within the algorithm, lack of transparency or interpretability, violation of individuals' right to privacy, and eroding of the role of human decision-making. The legal aspect of the study will include an examination of the concept of accountability with respect to AI systems that result in harm to humans, as well as the challenges that exist in complying with recent regulations on this issue, such as data protection regulations. A significant portion of the study will be focused upon the importance of developing auditable AI systems to ensure that they comply with all applicable regulations.
