Abstract

Traditionally, smart meters were chiefly tailored for single-phase household applications. On the other hand, in this work, the developed three-phase smart meter (SM) has been specifically designed and tested for sophisticated power quality monitoring within industrial and commercial domains. Overcoming the limitations of existing three-phase meters, this SM boasts a current measurement capability of approximately 100 A, with potential for further expansion. Encompassing measurement parameters like voltage, current, power factor, frequency, power, and energy, this SM’s standout feature lies in its Internet of Things (IoT) integration. This enables both utilities and consumers to access and interpret various parameters and power quality indicators. Notably, the cost of the developed three-phase SM proves more economical than comparable market offerings. While IoT-driven demand-side management initiatives show promise, their optimization requires further exploration. Moreover, the developed smart meter theoretically remains independent of load types—whether linear or non-linear—yet empirical validation is necessary.
