Abstract
Waste management is a significant challenge in urban areas, requiring efficient and sustainable solutions. An IoT-based Smart Garbage Monitoring and Alert System is presented in this study to maximize garbage collection in smart cities. Sensors, microcontrollers, and cloud-based analytics are all integrated into the system to track dustbin conditions in real time and send out timely trash disposal signals. The suggested system combines gas sensors to identify hazardous chemicals released by decaying waste with ultrasonic sensors to gauge the amount of trash within the trashcan. Additionally, A Gas sensor, temperature and humidity sensor monitor environmental conditions, ensuring fire safety in case of hazardous waste accumulation. These sensors are connected to a microcontroller unit (MCU) such as an ESP32, which transmits the data via Wi-Fi communication to a cloud-based server. The collected data is processed and visualised through a mobile application, enabling municipal authorities to track and manage waste collection more efficiently. When a dustbin reaches its capacity, an automated alert notification is sent to waste collectors, optimising collection schedules and reducing unnecessary trips. When a dustbin reaches a predefined threshold, an automatic alert notification is sent to waste collectors, reducing unnecessary trips and optimising fuel consumption. Additionally, GPS tracking is incorporated to locate and track the dustbins, ensuring proper placement and maintenance. The system also employs machine learning algorithms to predict waste accumulation patterns, allowing for dynamic scheduling of garbage collection based on historical data. This approach enhances urban cleanliness, reduces overflowing bins, minimises environmental hazards, and promotes sustainability.
