Abstract
In response to the growing complexity of modern supply chains, artificial intelligence (AI) has emerged as a strategic catalyst for enhancing the performance, resilience, and agility of organisations. This systematic literature review investigates how the integration of AI is reshaping management control practices and tools within the supply chain context. Drawing upon 48 peer-reviewed articles published between 2018 and 2025, retrieved from the Scopus, Web of Science (WOS), and ScienceDirect databases, the study identifies and analyses three key dimensions of transformation. First, it explores the evolution of logistics management control tools through the application of AI-driven technologies such as predictive analytics, digital twins, and blockchain. Second, it examines the shifting role of management controllers in an increasingly automated and data-intensive environment, where they act as both system architects and ethical overseers. Finally, the review highlights the concrete benefits of AI integration - including cost reductions, operational optimisation, and improved traceability - while also addressing its limitations, such as algorithmic opacity, ethical concerns, and infrastructure demands. The findings offer a comprehensive understanding of how AI is redefining decision-making processes in logistics, while underscoring the need for balanced human-machine collaboration, ongoing skills development, and robust regulatory frameworks.
