A systematic literature review on the function and advancement of assistive technology in promoting inclusive education, especially in higher education institutions, to provide a thorough mapping of trends, difficulties, and opportunities in this subject.
Abstract
In the era of Industrial Revolution 4.0, technology has emerged as a major force behind the rapid transformation of various industries, with education being among the most significantly impacted. The educational landscape has changed as a result of the integration of digital technologies, automation, artificial intelligence (AI), and the Internet of Things (IoT). This has created the potential to create learning systems that are more inclusive, flexible, and customized. Although these developments raise the possibility of equal access to education, obstacles still affect students with impairments. Inadequate assistive technology, poor physical accessibility, and a lack of staff training to adequately help students with special needs are some of the limitations. By performing a systematic literature review (SLR) on the function and advancement of assistive technology in promoting inclusive education, especially in higher education institutions, this study aims to close these gaps. The research attempts to provide a thorough mapping of trends, difficulties, and opportunities in this subject by combining pertinent papers. Policymakers, practitioners, and innovators are anticipated to gain important insights from such an overview when developing policies that support inclusive and disability-friendly education that is in line with technological advancements. The results of the studied literature consistently show that using assistive technology has a major positive impact. These include increased engagement in inclusive learning environments, better life skill development, and gains in academic accomplishment. Moreover, the integration of assistive technology fosters greater independence, confidence, and active engagement among students with disabilities. Therefore, in the period of the Industrial Revolution, the development of assistive technologies in education not only promotes inclusion but also guarantees that technical improvement benefits all students.
