Abstract

Credit scoring systems that are both accurate and efficient are more important than ever in today's financial world. Due to its simplicity and reliance on constrained data sources, classic credit scoring methodologies like the FICO score may not capture the complexities of modern financial behavior. The goal of this research is to improve the efficiency, fairness, and predicted accuracy of loan acceptance using a credit scoring system that is based on Machine Learning (ML). To sift through mountains of financial data—including applicant income, loan amount, credit score, and other demographic details—we use a mix of Logistic Regression and Random Forest classifiers. Tools like feature engineering and sophisticated data pretreatment methods are employed to generate valuable features, such the loan-to-income ratio. The study optimizes the model's efficacy by utilizing Grid SearchCV for hyper parameter tuning. Precision, recall, F1-score, and AUC-ROC are some of the evaluation metrics we use. Data insights and model performance are presented in a comprehensive manner using visualizations like 3D plots and heat maps. Improved accuracy and generalizability are two areas where the project's optimized Random Forest classifier outperforms Logistic Regression. Credit scoring systems can be improved by utilizing alternate data sources and dynamic models, according to the research. Furthermore, studies show that continuous evaluation is necessary to guarantee that models are fair and in accordance with regulatory requirements. We offer a workable solution that is prepared to be integrated into current loan processing workflows by preserving the most performing model for deployment. This work provides a robust, data-driven approach to credit rating, which paves the way for more accessible and efficient lending procedures.
