Impact of professionalism education integrated with mini-CEX on clinical competency in obstetrics and gynecology clerkships: A brief report

BACKGROUND: This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of integrating professional education with Mini-CEX in improving clinical competency in Obstetrics and Gynecology (OBGYN) clerkships. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 116 clinical medicine students were randomly divided into two groups: the experimental group (58 students) received professionalism education along with conventional teaching, incorporating Mini-CEX assessments every two weeks, while the control group (58 students) received conventional teaching only. The Mini-CEX tool included seven components: medical interview, physical examination, professionalism, clinical judgment, explanation and education, organizational efficiency, and overall competence. Students were assessed using a 9-point scale ranging from 1 (needs improvement) to 9 (excellent). RESULTS: The experimental group showed a significant improvement in clinical competency scores, especially in the domains of professionalism and clinical judgment. CONCLUSION: The integration of professionalism education with Mini-CEX significantly enhances clinical competencies, particularly in the domains of professionalism and clinical judgment, supporting its incorporation into OBGYN clerkships.
