Abstract

We have developed an information communication technology (ICT) instructional system that helps aspiring students of engineering become adaptable to the ever-changing state of ICT. This online instructional system enables students at all years of college of technology including five-year regular and two-year advanced departments, to learn practical technologies by coordinating with real hardware distributed networks through VPN-secured mobile SINET (Science Information NETwork) and the internet. Our system integrates various instructional studies, including on numerical computations, computer graphics, game applications with high-level programming languages, logic circuits, computer-system design in machine language, with a CPU internal simulator, a network function virtualization (NFV) server, controllable real single board computers (SBCs), and real field programmable gate-array (FPGA) mobile multihop networks. The real networks integrated into this instructional system are effective for comprehensively and directly observing how various ICT essentials function in the system. Consequently, the system enables students to take the first step towards design of distributed systems such as edge computing, while exercising their creativity. Students participating in regular courses using this instructional system improved their scores and progress in subjects by 13–19 points. The instructional system provides students with an environment that will make them industry-ready, by giving hands on experience with software, hardware and applications, i.e., communication networks, distributed shared memory (DSM), high-resolution video, location / positioning technology, and generative AI.
