Abstract

This study explored the effectiveness of biometric authentication technologies in mitigating examination malpractice within higher education institutions, using some selected polytechnics in Benue State as case study. The research aimed to identify suitable biometric modalities, evaluate stakeholder perceptions, and develop a framework for implementation. A mixed-methods approach was employed, combining literature review, surveys, focus groups, and pilot testing. Results indicate that fingerprint recognition and facial recognition are suitable for these institutions, with 80% of stakeholders accepting biometric authentication. Pilot testing revealed a 75% reduction in cheating incidents and 90% reduction in impersonation cases. A well-tailored framework is proposed, prioritizing data security, stakeholder engagement, and continuous evaluation. The study demonstrates the potential of biometric authentication to enhance examination security and integrity, providing recommendations for policymakers and educational institutions to adopt these technologies effectively and ethically.
