Abstract
AI-engendered synthetic media that persuasively manipulate audio, video, or images are known as Deepfakes. Although primarily intended for entertainment, their misapplication has raised grave legal, political, and cybersecurity apprehensions. This paper concentrates on Deepfakes' legal and technological challenges, highlighting Indian laws and worldwide comparisons. We will consider the crimes mainly associated with Deepfakes, evaluate the currently authorized outlines, and assess detection or exposure mechanisms and platform responses. Additionally, this study examines the malicious use of underground deepfake tools and AI-driven cybercrime tactics that amplify security risks. To discuss prevailing breaches, we will discuss diverse frameworks to strengthen organizational defenses against deepfake threats. This paper will emphasize the necessity for efficient protocols and robust detection devices. This will provide a clear perception for policymakers, legal experts, cybersecurity professionals, and persons who regulate digital platforms and help them grasp and alleviate the impact of deepfakes.
