Abstract
Football has evolved into one of the most powerful socio-cultural institutions in Nigeria, transcending ethnic, religious and regional divisions that have historically shaped political and social relations. This paper examined football as a unifying factor against ethnicity and as an anchor for political development in Nigeria. It argues that football functions not only as a recreational activity but also as a strategic instrument for national integration, civic engagement and democratic consolidation. Drawing on contemporary literature on sport and nation-building, the study explored how national football events, particularly the performances of the Super Eagles, foster collective identity and emotional solidarity among diverse ethnic groups. It further analysed the role of football governance structures, fan culture and media representation in shaping political consciousness and civic participation. The study adopted a qualitative analytical approach, relying on secondary data from scholarly works, policy documents and recent sports governance reports. Findings suggest that football reduces ethnic tension by creating shared national symbols, narratives and emotional investments. However, the study also observed that political elites sometimes instrumentalize football for legitimacy and political capital. Despite this limitation, football remains a significant platform for political socialization, youth engagement and national cohesion. The paper concluded that football can contribute meaningfully to political development in Nigeria if properly institutionalized through transparent sports governance, youth inclusion policies and national development strategies. It recommends stronger integration of sports diplomacy into governance frameworks as a tool for unity and democratic strengthening.
