Abstract

Until recently, Armenia's plant-growing sector was primarily focused on fruit cultivation and viticulture. Today, greenhouse floriculture has emerged as an important component of this sector. The

development of protected agriculture holds strong prospects for Armenia, a country facing adverse

climatic conditions and limited arable land.

Greenhouse farming enables the successful application of advanced technologies, which not only

ensure high productivity but also incorporate nearly all aspects of precision agriculture. Traditionally,

greenhouses have been used for cultivating vegetables and greens. However, floriculture is now gaining substantial importance. In some countries, greenhouses are even used to grow subtropical crops

such as kiwi and bananas. Nevertheless, industrial-scale production remains concentrated primarily on

vegetable cultivation and floriculture.

A key driver behind this development is the stable demand in export markets. The Russian Federation is currently the largest export destination for Armenian greenhouse-grown flowers. Therefore, it

is essential to further strengthen Armenia’s position in that market while also exploring opportunities

for diversification.

This article explores the achievements of greenhouse floriculture in Armenia, reviews international

experience in the application of intensive technologies in this field, and assesses the potential for expanding Armenia's export markets.
