Abstract

The objective of this research was to analyze the factors associated with university dropout rates at apublic institution in Peru, despite satisfactory per capita spending per student. The study was basic innature, with a quantitative approach and a relational and cross-sectional design. A sample of 156 dropoutstudents was surveyed using a structured questionnaire. Spearman's rho correlations and chi-squareanalyses were applied to identify the relationship between personal, economic, academic, andinstitutional factors and dropout. The results showed that none of these factors significantly explaineddropout, with the influential elements being the lack of vocational profile matching, immediate jobexpectations, and the demands of the academic program. In conclusion, 71% of participants who weresatisfied with the conditions provided by the university decided to drop out due to lack of motivation, academic risk, and poor institutional commitment. Strengthening tutoring and pedagogical support fromthe moment students enter university will improve student retention.
