Abstract

Developing effective reading habits and attaining satisfactory reading comprehension are essential components of successful English language learning among ESL learners. The present study aims to explore the relationship between reading habits and reading comprehension among Pakistani undergraduate ESL learners studying at public and private sector universities in Pakistan. A quantitative research approach employing a correlational design was adopted to examine the association between students’ reading practices and their comprehension of English texts. Data were collected through two research instruments: a structured questionnaire designed to investigate students’ reading habits and a standardized reading comprehension test to evaluate their understanding of English reading materials. The target population consisted of undergraduate ESL learners enrolled in different academic disciplines at the university level. Using simple random sampling, a sample of 150 undergraduate students was selected for the study. Statistical analysis was conducted through Spearman Rank-Order Correlation to determine the strength and direction of the relationship between the two variables. The findings revealed a positive relationship between students’ reading habits and their reading comprehension performance. The results further indicated that students who engaged more frequently in English reading activities, such as reading academic texts, online articles, and short English fiction, demonstrated comparatively better comprehension abilities. However, the study also found that many students lacked consistent daily reading practices in English, which negatively affected their reading proficiency and comprehension skills. The study highlights the importance of promoting regular reading habits among Pakistani undergraduate ESL learners to enhance their reading literacy and academic performance. It is recommended that university teachers encourage extensive reading practices, integrate reflective reading strategies into classroom instruction, and motivate students to engage with diverse English reading materials on a regular basis.
