Abstract
The continued advancement of high-performance computing, data science, and cloud storage technologies is creating new opportunities for digital twin applications in the offshore industry. For floating platforms, the objective of this research is to evaluate how digital twins can improve asset economics, operational safety, and lifecycle performance, while also acting as valuable design references for future developments. Methods,
The study categorizes applications of digital twin technology in the context of offshore floating platforms and presents a framework for integrating real-time operational data with advanced analytics and machine learning techniques. Data pipelines are described from sensor acquisition through cloud-based storage and processing, with emphasis on lifecycle applications ranging from early design validation to operation and eventual decommissioning. Key technical domains examined include structural integrity, mooring line monitoring, hydrodynamic behavior and vessel motion analysis, drilling system performance, and production efficiency optimization. This research offers a structured assessment of digital twin applications tailored specifically to offshore floating platforms, linking technical capabilities with lifecycle management strategies and sustainability goals. By integrating intelligent, data-driven methods into asset management, the work highlights how digital twins can act not only as operational tools but also as strategic enablers of long-term transformation in offshore engineering and maritime operations builders. The findings indicate that digital twins enable real-time monitoring, predictive analysis, and optimization of platform performance, leading to measurable improvements in structural safety, drilling efficiency, and asset reliability. Cloud-enabled data platforms serve as critical enablers, providing scalable and secure infrastructure for handling diverse and high-volume datasets. However, challenges remain in the areas of data integration, cybersecurity, interoperability, and standardization across equipment types and operating environments. Addressing these risks is essential for realizing the full potential of digital twin technologies. Overall, the study demonstrates that digital twins can reduce unplanned downtime, extend platform life, and contribute directly to cost efficiency and environmental performance.
