Developing generic skills in psychological education: Cultivating the fundamental competencies for lifelong career development

This report is based on the study of building up the new teaching seminar called “Career Psychology”, which is designed for undergraduate students to cultivate the fundamental competencies for the career development. The comparative research among undergraduate students of psychology major had been conducted to evaluate the educational effects of the core curriculum. The aim of this research is also to find out which skills should be maintained by the students during the process of learning at University. The study demonstrates that there are several critical differences between students and teaching staffs on the ideas of which skills are to be significant for the lifelong development. Discussion between the two will be necessary for making good efforts on both the teaching side and the learning side of generic skills. And for all students, building up the strength of mind to step forward in every situation seems to be something most important for their career development. Moreover, according to the comparison, there are significant characteristics in the junior students that they are with lower level of self-esteem and higher expectation of stability orientation. These results provide the ideas of how our new seminar can be suitable for the junior students who need to be empowered for their career development. Therefore three tasks would be recommended in this seminar, which are: (1) to consider their own lifelong career, (2) to learn by the observations through a graduate as a succeeded model, (3) to reevaluate their present achievement for helping them to be more self-confident.
