Abstract

This study presents the design and implementation of a scalable, and real-time web-based Blood Bank Management System (BBMS) developed to tackle the limitations of traditional manual systems utilized for blood and transfusion services, like poor data accuracy, slow and delayed response time, poor blood units management that often leads to blood wastage. The new system leverages a three-tier web application architecture, consisting of a frontend developed with React.js, Express.js for the backend, and MongoDB database to ensure performance, scalability, and data integrity. Key features of the new system include secure donor registration, real-time blood inventory tracking with push notification for low stock alerts and donation statistic reminder, automated blood request handling, and role-based access control. Evaluation reports of the new system show that it reduced the average time for donor registration by over 60%, and also improved request approval time to seconds, a shift from the long hours needed for approval in manual systems. Other results show that the new system lowered manual data entry errors by 70%, and an outstanding average of 87/100 System Usability Scale (SUS) score based on a user survey with 10 hospital staff and donors. This high SUS score highlights system responsiveness and ease of use. Recommended future advancements of the system include integrating AI-driven demand forecasting, incorporating blockchain-based audit trails, and mobile accessibility
