Abstract

This study reviews BPM literature, examining how research conceptualizes and reports the relationship between BPM, performance, and sustainability, key trends, gaps, and future directions, combining bibliometric analysis with previously published case studies to connect theory and practice for organizational optimization. A bibliometric analysis of 1049 SCOPUS articles (1989–2024) used co‐occurrence and bibliographic coupling in VOSviewer to identify key themes. Ten previously published case studies were analyzed as illustrative evidence to link theory with practice. Five key research clusters were identified: emerging technologies; continuous process improvement; innovation and decision‐making; business process modeling and redesign; and BPM implementation frameworks. We also highlight how the literature associates these clusters with sustainable development and their conceptual alignment with selected Sustainable Development Goal (SDGs). The findings highlight the role attributed to BPM in the literature in supporting efficiency, decision‐making, innovation, and sustainability‐related objectives. Organizations can use BPM to enhance responsiveness and competitiveness. The analysis is limited to articles indexed in the Scopus database, excluding other scholarly sources not indexed in Scopus. This study combines bibliometric analysis with case studies, providing a comprehensive view of BPM's theoretical and practical dimensions. It enhances understanding of how BPM‐related performance effects are discussed in prior research and practice.
