Abstract

Urban parks play a significant role in enhancing physical, psychological, and social well-being by providing spaces for recreation, relaxation, and social interaction. In rapidly urbanizing cities such as Lagos, the quality and functionality of these parks are critical to improving urban living conditions. However, many urban parks in Lagos face challenges including poor maintenance, inadequate facilities, limited accessibility, and safety concerns, which may reduce their effectiveness in supporting user well-being. This study assesses the relationship between urban park characteristics and user well-being in Lagos State, Nigeria. A quantitative research approach was adopted using structured questionnaires administered to 400 park users across four selected urban parks. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, Pearson correlation, and multiple regression analysis with the aid of the Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS). The findings revealed that vegetation, safety, and cleanliness significantly influence user well-being, with vegetation emerging as the strongest predictor. The study concludes that well-designed and properly maintained parks contribute significantly to improved mental and social well-being. It is recommended that urban planners prioritize green infrastructure, safety, and maintenance to enhance park usability and user satisfaction.
