Abstract

The expansion of wind generation capacity within electrical grids necessitates their active power participation in grid management functions. This work evaluates the wind energy potential contribution to primary frequency regulation. Effective participation for providing such service requires wind farms to maintain available backup capacity; thereby over-speeding technique is employed to establish the required reserve margin specified by grid operators. A coordinated control strategy, combining synthetic inertial response and active power deloading, is proposed to integrate wind farms into frequency regulation. The control scheme activates upon detecting grid frequency deviations, initiating the wind farm's response. The proposed combined control framework is evaluated through numerical simulations. The results demonstrate the capability and effectiveness of wind farms for primary frequency regulation.
