Abstract

The famous phrase by Theodosius Dobzhansky remains as relevant today as ever: "Nothing in Biology Makes Sense Except in the Light of Evolution." Understanding the evolutionary contexto behind the establishment of biochemical systems contributes to a deeper comprehension of their mechanisms and functions. AI-driven methods have significantly advanced bioinformatics. While these advances are remarkable, they are only the beginning of what AI promises to achieve in the study of evolution, particularly in areas such as orthology determination, which is crucial for identifying evolutionary relationships and functional conservation among genes. This presentation will outline the main strategies, algorithms, and computational tools employed in investigating biochemical system evolution, provide examples of studies in the field, and discuss future perspectives for the application of AI in this domain.
