Abstract

This paper presents an extended analysis on a load shedding scheme with fast restoration used to prevent genset stalling. The restoration method, which considers the causes of genset stalling due to sudden load steps in microgrids, reduces shed load disconnection times from several seconds to even under a second in some cases. Since it has been tested on purely resistive loading conditions in previous work, lagging power factor loads are used in this work for testing the performance of the algorithm in comparison. In addition, a case with motor load is considered as a proof of concept to initiate studies in this direction. Results demonstrate the algorithm can be useful in preventing stalling when powering loads with lower power factors than unity. Nonetheless, the loading condition demonstrates to be more challenging for the genset, and usually larger auxiliary loads are required for shedding.
