Abstract
Recent advances in deep learning (DL) have transformed bird bioacoustics by allowing for automated analysis of vocal signals on unprecedented scales. Convolutional neural networks (CNNs), residual models (BirdNET), and hybrid CNN−RNN architectures can now classify hundreds to thousands of species based on their calls. These methods uncover acoustic features associated with bird vocal organs (syrinx physiology) and communication function, while also significantly improving conservation monitoring (species inventories, habitat assessment, population tracking). Selfsupervised learning, data augmentation (mix-up, background noise), and transfer learning are all complementary approaches that help improve model generalization. Modern bioacoustics indices and sensor networks work together with machine learning pipelines to generate ecological indicators. This review discusses key technical advances (BirdNET ResNet, CNN-LSTM models, transformers, and self-supervised methods) with performance metrics, as well as their implications for understanding bird vocal mechanisms and acoustic communication. Conservation applications such as population tracking, biodiversity indexing, and endangered species detection now benefit from machine learning-driven passive acoustic monitoring (PAM), mobile apps, and dense sensor networks. The review also discusses key challenges such as noise interference, data imbalance, and model generalization, and suggests future directions centered on standardized datasets and multimodal fusion. Future directions include the development of standardized datasets, the enhancements to transfer learning protocols, and long-term studies of vocal learning.
