Abstract

This study assessed the adoption of improved poultry production and management practices among farmers in Jos South Local Government Area of Plateau State, Nigeria. A multistage sampling technique was used to select 120 respondents from four districts for the study. Data were collected using structured questionnaires and key informant interviews and analyzed using frequency distributions, percentages, means and logit regression. Results showed that 100% of respondents were aware of fundamental practices, including vaccination, improved breeds, hygiene, and the provision of clean water. The most widely adopted practices included feeding and clean water ( = 4.0), vaccination ( = 3.5) and improved breeds ( = 3.3). The logit model identified six significant factors influencing adoption: educational status (coefficient = 0.0958), farming experience (coefficient =3.693), household size (coefficient = -0.0538), access to credit (coefficient = 2.0490), income level (coefficient = 1.2086) and extension contact (coefficient =1.397). Major constraints to the adoption of improved poultry production/management practices included the high cost of improved practices (92%), inadequate extension services (81%), and limited access to credit (64%). Government and relevant stakeholders should enact policies that aim at reducing the cost of vaccines, feed, and equipment through targeted subsidies or cooperative bulk purchasing.
