Abstract

This study aimed to examine the feasibility of two-story life-cycle carbon minus (LCCM) rental apartments. To assess feasibility, we analyzed the ability of LCCMs for improving heat insulation, improving photovoltaic power generation system performance, using biomass in lumber and oriented strand board manufacturing, and improving the air conditioner efficiency. Our results identified cases where the LCCM can be achieved by combining all of these measures. Further, we conducted a case study on housing life and the amount of power generated for future dissemination, clarifying the issues related to achievability. This study aimed to clarify the feasibility of two-story life-cycle carbon minus (LCCM) rental apartments. Based on ZEH-M, we examined measures to reduce CO 2 emissions to achieve LCCM. We studied a demonstration housing construction that achieves LCCM while aligning with the current business model (such as 35 years of housing life and avoiding significant cost increases). We also conducted a case study for future dissemination and obtained the following results: we conducted a case study on the useful life of houses and the amount of power generated. The results suggested that achievability was greatly improved by extending the life of the house. We verified that the amount of power generated is likely to be achieved in areas where sunshine hours are longer than in the area (metropolitan area) targeted in this study. Further, this could be achieved in many cases by improving the capacity of the photovoltaic power generation system. 4) A reduction of CO 2 emissions and comprehensive reduction should be the primary aim to reduce environmental impacts. We used LIME2 to evaluate environmental stress from CO 2 and other impacts. In this study, human health, social assets, biodiversity, primary production, and integration were calculated. However, the balance was not negative in either case. Results demonstrated that the load caused by energy consumption was relatively small, and the load caused by the production of input materials was large compared to the CO 2 emissions. Therefore, it is important to consider reducing the load associated with material manufacturing. In this case, the load caused by the manufacture of the photovoltaic power generation system is particularly large, and it is important to reduce the load during the manufacture of the photovoltaic power generation systems.
