Abstract

In today's digital age, sharing data is integral to various sectors, thus making network and system security very important. This is because hackers and intruders can easily breach the system and pose a big threat, hence requiring strong measures to protect resources. Intrusion detection system(IDS) plays an important role in detecting and combating threats by monitoring user behavior and classifying activities as either normal or malicious. This research presents a new method of improving the performance of IDS through combining Rough Set Theory and Support Vector Machines. The process gathers packets from a network, preprocessed through RST for reduction of dimensions, whereby important features can be extracted while removing unimportant ones, and further processed using the SVM machine learning model due to its great accuracy in classification. Experimental results show that the proposed RST-SVM-based approach significantly reduces data density, and improves detection performance compared to PCA-based methods; it increases accuracy by about 12% and false positives by about 15%. Another advantage of using RST is that data preprocessing reduces only the dimensionality of data but also preserves the critical information, which improves computational efficiency and makes the system scalable with large datasets. This minimizes redundancy in the model, which is vital for faster data processing in real-time network monitoring. Also, the SVM model relies on the optimized feature set to produce high precision when distinguishing between benign and malicious activities; it therefore overcomes some of the limitations of traditional IDS approaches that often fail in dealing with high-dimensional or noisy data. Moreover, the integration of RST with SVM introduces a robust framework that can respond dynamically to changing threat environments. It can handle these evolutions in attack patterns very effectively without compromising the reliability of the detection. Overall, this paper introduces a comprehensive and practical approach toward the challenges of the modern IDS, ensuring enhanced security in increasingly complex network environments.
