Abstract

The Rapid advancement in computer vision and artificial intelligence has introduced sports analytics into a new era characterized by enhanced precision, digital integration, and automated analysis. Accurately detecting and tracking football players and video sequences are complex tasks due to dynamic player motion, shifting lighting conditions, and frequent occlusions on the field. Even with strong progress in object detection, earlier YOLO models (v1-v10) aren't fully dependable for football analytics due to motion blur, overlapping players, and the absence of built-in tracking capabilities. The integration of YOLO models with tracking algorithms like ByteTrack improves tracking continuity across video frames. To process and analyze football video frames effectively, YOLOv11 can be integrated with OpenCV for real-time video input and frame handling. YOLOv11 extends beyond all the former approaches regarding accuracy, speed, and efficiency, which makes it an optimal selection for a vast scope of instance segmentation and object detection, tracking, pose estimation, and image classification. While many YOLO versions (especially from YOLOv5 onwards) have multiple scaled variants (n, s, m, 1, x), YOLOv11 ‘s variants outperform due to improved architectural innovations, enhanced feature extraction techniques, and optimized training methods that directly improve real-time applications like football analysis. YOLOv11is designed upon the advancements that are innovated in YOLOv9 and YOLOv10. YOLOv11 attains a higher mAP with respect to the benchmark dataset utilizing 22% fewer arguments compared to the YOLOv8 model. YOLOv11 comes with an accelerated processing speed, and it is around 2% more efficient than YOLOv10, which makes it a well-suited preference for football strategy enhancement.
