Abstract

This study primarily explores the interaction between the science of al-Wujūh wa al-Nazāʾir (wa'n-Nazair) and Arabic lexicography. To observe this, one representative work from each field, written around the same period, has been selected: al-Wujūh wa’n-Nazāʾir by al-ʿAskarī and Muʿjam Maqāyīs al-Lugha by Ibn Fāris. The study first provides a historical overview of both sciences to establish a theoretical basis. Then, both authors are introduced, and their respective works are comparatively analyzed in terms of methodology, purpose, and content. The similarities and differences between them are further examined through the example of two specific lexical concepts (rūḥ and kufr). Ultimately, the research examines whether these two disciplines influenced one another in terms of methods, purposes, and development. The study employs an inductive approach, following the stages of data collection, analysis, comparison, and evaluation. The findings suggest that Arabic lexicological studies played a significant role in the systematization of the Wujūh and Nazāʾir literature; the latter also contributed to the formation of dictionaries by presenting data and offering ideas.
