Abstract

This article discusses the linguistic phenomenon known as emendations — i.e. attempts to correct a damaged text based on certain conclusions drawn by researchers. As an example, it uses the corrections made to the Book of Job by various scholars as a case study, as the book is one of the most difficult books of the Old Testament to understand. The article describes the mistakes that occur during the copying process and the different types of emendations used to correct these errors. It also provides examples of these emendations in the biblical text and analyzes the acceptability of different types of corrections based on selected criteria, with strict adherence to patristic interpretation being considered most important. The significance of this study lies in its exploration of various approaches to working with the Holy Scriptures, ranging from a very liberal approach to one that defends the current text rigorously. As a result, it is not always clear to an Orthodox Christian reader how to properly interpret attempts to correct textual «dark places» or other passages from the Bible by translators. This article may be interesting for a wide range of readers, so all quotes from the Old Testament in Eastern languages have been written using simplified transcriptions.
