Abstract

: In order to meet the demands of social reality, Vietnam's 2018 General Education Curriculum aims to develop competencies such as autonomy, self-study,…. Students must be able to exercise self-control and self-regulation to understand themselves and learning tasks, which will enable them to select appropriate learning strategies or make wise decisions. Therefore, developing metacognitive competency (“thinking about thinking”) is extremely necessary. This study has systematized and analyzed foreign and in-country scientific researches on developing metacognitive competency. The results show that metacognitive competency and the application of developing metacognitive for students across subjects have attracted the attention of many researchers. Researches on metacognition are diverse, but most of them follow similar principles in defining concepts and determining structures to develop assessment. In Vietnam, there have been some publications on developing metacognitive for students through teaching high school subjects, but not many, mainly focusing on Math and Foreign languages. This overview study contributes to the theoretical basis to promote the development of research on improving metacognitive for students in Vietnam.
