Abstract
The increasing global interest in phytochemicals for therapeutic applications has led to significant research into triterpenoids, especially α-amyrin, due to its promising pharmacological properties. . Therefore, the objective of this paper was to extract, isolate, and characterize the phytochemicals of α-amyrin from leaves of Ocimum gratissimum collected from Aremo, along F-Division, Tanke, Ilorin, North Central Nigeria using appropriate standard procedures including, Fourier-Transform Infrared (FTIR), and Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) spectroscopy. The results confirmed the presence of α-amyrin, showing key diagnostic signals and chemical shifts consistent with known literature. This research not only confirms Ocimum gratissimum as a viable source of α-amyrin but also contributes to ongoing efforts in the search for sustainable, plant-based therapeutics for drug development. Limitations include small yield and lack of in vivo validation, warranting further pharmacological and clinical investigations.
