Decoding the Semantic Reality of “Huwa Nabāʾun ʿAẓīm” in the Thought of Exegetes of Both Islamic Denominations

Inquiry and investigation into the Qur’an is among the essential expectations the Qur’an and the Infallibles place upon human beings. In the Qur’an, there are instances where disagreement exists among exegetes regarding the referent of a pronoun. One such case that is not exempt from this issue is the referent of the pronoun "huwa" in Sūrat Ṣād, in the phrase "huwa nabāʾun ʿaẓīm". The present study, utilizing a descriptive-analytical method and drawing upon library-based sources, seeks to resolve this issue. The findings of this research indicate that the referent of the pronoun returns to either the Day of Resurrection or the Qur’an, both of which align with the thematic structure and objective of the sūrah.
