Tolerant T cells display characteristic patterns of gene expression and epigenetics that are distinct from other types of T cells and are orchestrated by the transcription factor NR4A1, which is identified as a key general regulator in the induction of T cell dysfunction, and a potential target for tumour immunotherapy.
